Acts 2 :40-47
40 With many other words he warned them; and he pleaded with them, “Save yourselves from this corrupt generation.” 41 Those who accepted his message were baptized, and about three thousand were added to their number that day.42 They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. 43 Everyone was filled with awe, and many wonders and miraculous signs were done by the apostles. 44 All the believers were together and had everything in common. 45 Selling their possessions and goods, they gave to anyone as he had need. 46 Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, 47 praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being save.
What do you do when God takes you to another level spiritually? What do you do when you enter into a mode of revival in your church? How do you sustain it?
In the book of Acts, the Holy Spirit (promised from Jesus in John 16) is poured out and now Peter preaches a message beyond his own ability. People were “cut to the heart” by His words and they asked peter, “What should we do?” Peter tells them to repent, be baptized and receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. and then the bible says in verse 41 that “3,000 people were added to the church that day“. REVIVAL! Another level! I love verse 41! I pray for verse 41 to happen in our ministries, but I have learned to love, honor, and appreciate verse 47 even more where it says, ” The Lord added DAILY those who were being saved.” As much as I want 3,000 in a day, I want a sustained growth over a lifetime.
To illustrate my point, Lets talk about marriage…Before I was married, I looked up to any guy that was willing to tie himself down (commit) to one girl for the rest of His life. But now that I am married, my perspective has changed. I don’t admire weddings that start, but rather marriages that last. One of Natalie and I’s favorite things to see is an older married couple in love and publicly showing it (creepy I know). We always grab each other’s hands and tell each other that’s what we want to be. I feel the same way about moves of God in people’s life. I don’t admire as much the 3,000 added to their number that day (wedding) as I admire the sustained daily growth of the church and of the believer (marriage). So how do we sustain a move of God? Or i could ask, “How do we get from verse 41 to verse 47?
5 Keys to sustaining a move of God:
1. Put a ring on it.
42 They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. Like the theologian and recording artist Beyoncé once said, “If you like it, then you should have put a ring on it.” Devote yourself to the new you and the new way of life God is calling you to. We do not devote ourselves to the actual move of God, we devote ourselves to the person that brought the move of God.
5 things you need to devote to:
- Pray every day
- Read your Bible everyday
- Fast periodically
- Worship continually
- Don’t miss Sunday Church
2. Hang out with people!
v. 46…”They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts,” You need to hang around other believers who will love you, protect you, correct you when you are wrong. Your daughter doesn’t count. your husband doesn’t count. You need to hang out with christian people! Also, There is something supernatural that happens around food! Eat food together!
3 types of people you need for a balanced christian life: 1. Other Christians 2. mentors 3. unbelievers.
3. Be generous!
44 All the believers were together and had everything in common. 45 Selling their possessions and goods, they gave to anyone as he had need.” This verse does not mean they sold literally everything they owned. They still had clothes on their back and houses and cattle. But they stewarded there money well enough that they always had excess to give to those in need. Be a good steward of your money! Don’t be greedy! Tithe, give to missions! Make a difference with your money.
4. Have fun!
“47 praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people.” We have this weird mentality that in order to have a move of God, it requires mounts and mounts of sacrifice…..and the truth is…. It does!!!! But it’s fun!!!!! We should be the happiest people in the planet! No club can compete with the presence of Jesus! Smile through your circumstances! Worship through your trials and have fun!!! Nehemiah 8:10 “…the joy of the Lord is your strength.”
5. Output what you input.
v. 47 …”And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.” Do something with what you’ve been given. The church did not get devoted, hang out with people, be generous, have fun, and then do nothing. They saw people come to Jesus! Do not become spiritually fat! Output what you input! Go on a missions trip, feed the homeless, start a small group, serve in a ministry! See people get saved!
For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.
