I think most of us have a good understanding that God has the power to change any atmosphere at any moment in any place for any reason that He seems fit (God is sovereign). But, some of us have a tough time with this next statement. “God wants to use ME to change the atmosphere.” In other words, It’s easy for God to use THEM, but harder to understand that God wants to use ME. Now before you start listing off all the reasons in your head why you can’t change your atmosphere, let me first tell you why you can. Lets start in the beginning and see how God has always been in the “Atmosphere changing business”.
In the beginning (Genesis 1), there was nothing and God’s spirit (translated “breath” in Hebrew) breathed creation into existence. In other words, God looked at nothing and changed the atmosphere by turning his breath into a word and speaking forth what WASN’T as though it WAS. God’s spoken word changed the atmosphere. God then looked at Adam and, through his Holy Spirit, breathed life into Adam’s body. Throughout the Old Testament, God breathed His spirit on specific Kings, Priests, & Prophets. He then sent his only Son (Jesus) who died for the sins of humanity. Jesus was buried in a tomb (dead atmosphere) and God breathed life back into Jesus. On the third day, Jesus rose from the dead! Jesus conquered and overcame the sin of the world and now anyone who believes in Jesus and lives for Him will be saved from their sin, guilt, and shame.
Jesus seemed to be continually challenging his disciples (followers) to change their atmosphere. We learn through the scriptures that Jesus also wants us to change our atmosphere. Jesus said in Mark 11:23 “Truly I tell you, if anyone says to this mountain, ‘Go, throw yourself into the sea,’ and does not doubt in their heart but believes that what they say will happen, it will be done for them.” In other words, Jesus is calling us to use the BREATH that God has given us to speak CHANGE into the ATMOSPHERE AROUND US. When we speak, the atmosphere will change.
John 11 describes the story of Lazarus. Lazarus who had been dead for four days. At this point, there is a horrible odor coming from the tomb in which he was buried because his body was already starting to decay. Jesus wanted to change the atmosphere and raise Lazarus to life. Approaching Lazarus’ tomb, Jesus said in verse 43-44, “Lazarus, come out!” The dead man (Lazarus) came out, his hands and feet wrapped with strips of linen, and a cloth around his face. Jesus said to them, “Take off the grave clothes and let him go.” Lazarus was raised from the dead! Talk about an atmosphere change! Are we seeing a pattern starting to form? Jesus looked at an impossible atmosphere and used the breath that God had given Him to speak a dead man back to life. The spoken word of Jesus changed the atmosphere.
How about an old testament story? In Ezekiel 37, God shows Ezekiel dry, dead bones and asks Ezekiel whether the bones can live. Ezekiel says, “Lord, Only you know.” God then tells Ezekiel to prophesy to the dry bones and tell them that they are going to live. Are you seeing the pattern? God told Ezekiel to look at the impossible atmosphere in front of Him and change it by using the breath that God has given Him to speak forth a word that God had put in him. As Ezekiel began to speak, the atmosphere began to change and the bones came back to life.
So….God used Ezekiel and Jesus to change atmospheres, but why would God use me? Great Question! Because scripture says in Romans 8:11, “The same Spirit that raised Christ from the dead now dwells in you!” This means that the same spirit that created the earth, breathed life into man, empowered Ezekiel, raised Christ from the dead, and is forming our tomorrow, is the same Spirit that is giving you the power to change your atmosphere for His glory! Your spoken words of faith empowered by His spirit can change the atmosphere. God is not looking for the right personality, skin color, economic status, or influence to change atmospheres. He is simply looking for faith! Faith in what He has DONE on the cross and faith in what He can DO in our future. He is searching for a person that has the faith to look at an overwhelming atmosphere and believe that God can change it. Be that person! Be the person that believes against all odds. Be the person that speaks forth change! Be the person that tells mountains to move! Be the person that commands dry bones back into life. Don’t show me a list of why God can’t use you. Instead, take your list to the cross and receive His perspective on your life! You are an overcomer! God wants to use YOU to speak change into the atmosphere!
Lastly, maybe you don’t feel like an overcomer. Maybe your personal atmosphere with God feels dry and weak. Don’t try to change on your own. That is not how the gospel works. Surrender your weaknesses to Jesus and ask Him to fill you fresh with His spirit today. Where you are weak, God will give you strength. Lean into His grace and allow him to fill you with His “Atmosphere Changing” Power.
Here are a couple of questions to leave you with:
- How is your personal atmosphere with God?
- What does the atmosphere around you look like? (School/ Work/ Home/ Church/ City/ Country)
- What words are being spoken out of your mouth about your atmosphere?
- How does Jesus get all the glory?
