I don’t know about you, but I have heard the word “faith” used in more ways than I can count or remember. Whether it is having “faith” that your spouse will do what she says she will do or “having faith” that you will pass the exam or land the job promotion, faith is utilized and exercised in our lives everyday . But, what is faith? How do you define it beyond just saying that it is a feeling you have?  Lucky for us, God defined it clearly and concisely in the book of Hebrews.

Hebrews 11:1  says, “Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.”

That’s it! That’s what faith is! It’s being confident in the things of God and being sure of it even though we don’t see it or always feel it.

Confident in the things of God

When I think of confidence, I think of a female looking in the mirror after buying a brand new outfit that fits perfect and thinking to herself, “I look good”. As a result, she walks with a confidence everywhere she goes. She is not only ready to meet another person or challenge, but is hoping to meet another person or challenge. Another picture of confidence is a student who has fully studied for his exam walking into the classroom with an extra skip in his step knowing that he is going to ace the test. His pencil is sharpened. His shoulders are back. His head up high. Confidence is a powerful thing.

Lets be the same way with the things of God! Let’s put our shoulders back and hold our heads up high. Let’s be confident! We may not know how it’s all going to work out, but we are confident that it will work out! If it’s not good then Gods not done (Romans 8:28)! Faith is confidence in the things of God.

Assurance in God

When I think of assurance, I think of two teenagers getting picked up by their parents from the mall.  Do you remember those days (my parents drove a minivan. Pray for me…)?  Their dad is supposed to be there at 6pm, but he is 5 minutes late. The teenagers suddenly become nervous because his tardiness might make them late to a movie. The girl wants to call, but instead, has an assurance that her father is right around the corner even though she didn’t see him. When she turns around, there he is just like he said he would be. She did not worry or panic because she was sure her father would make it on time.

Let’s have that same assurance in God! Let’s show the world our assurance in the things of God! Let’s live our lives with an optimism that God is right around the corner and will do what he says he will do- even when we can’t see Him.

What is Faith? It isn’t just a feeling we get. Faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.

Are you confident in the things of God? Are you sure God is who He says He is and will do what He says He will do? If not, what are you waiting for? Step out of the boat! Trust God! He will never lead you wrong!
